And I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and a great earthquake occurred, and the sun became black as a sackcloth made of hair, and the moon became like blood, and the stars of heaven fell down to the earth as a fig tree casts its figs when shaken by a strong wind, and the sky was parted as a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved by their places. And the kings of the earth and the magistrates and the military commanders and the rich and the powerful and every slave and free person hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. And they said to the mountains and the rocks: “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One sitting on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?” Revelation 6: 12-17
This seal shows signs that lead to Jesus’ return. He predicted them in His Mount of Olives sermon: “The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken” (Matthew 24: 29).
Four of the signs have occurred: the greatest earthquake recorded, called the earthquake of Lisbon (1755), a darkened sun for 14 hours (1780), a blood-red moon (1780), and most extensive record of meteoric shower (1833).* We are now living between those fulfilled signs and the ones to come. To come is the parting and rolling up of the sky. That happens in conjunction with the Second Coming. So does the earthquake that moves the mountains and islands. This coming earthquake is greater, more monumental, than the great earthquake that’s already taken place.
The Second Coming, aside from taking the church to heaven, is also God dispensing justice for His people. The wicked and those who have oppressed and persecuted the faithful will not escape God’s judgment. In the presence of the Lord, all levels of society will seek to hide. None will be successful. None will continue to live, as the fearful question rises among them: “Who is able to survive?”
