Is Salvation Lost Upon Becoming Mentally Disabled?

A fact of life is that after accepting Christ, some have been stricken with mental illness. The brain becomes damaged and dementia occurs: Alzheimer, schizophrenia, paranoia, etc. It happens as a consequence of the same causes of physical illnesses— sin’s permeating power of imperfection and corruption in our fallen world.

As a result, sometimes the afflicted will resort to acting in accordance with the physical, carnal nature that we all possess. Nothing in their behavior can be seen as Christian. Does that mean that they’ve lost their salvation?

No! The Lord is fair and He is compassionate. Before mental deterioration, when the afflicted person was able to reason, and the person gave his or her life to Jesus – fully committed in the heart – God honored and continues to honor that person’s decision. At the time, the willing choice to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior allowed for the Holy Spirit to seal the person.

God sees to it that the person remains sealed. He does that based on the person’s desire to remain with Him while the person was in the “right” mind.  I see Him as a merciful God who will not take away salvation from one who cannot any longer comprehend and be accountable for their actions.
