The True Lord’s Day

Jesus, of course, is the Lord of the Sabbath. He would be, considering He is the One who created it. He made that claim before the Pharisees, wanting them to know that He had the right, as the only authority, to dictate the circumstances of Sabbath observation and worship (Matthew 12: 8; Mark 2: 28; Luke 6: 5).

Today’s religious leaders, with the benefit of hindsight, should be more readily eager to accept Jesus’ position concerning the Sabbath. There is no excuse for dismissing His claim, especially after proclaiming Him to be their Lord and Savior and their example of righteous and obedient living. If they want to truly worship as He did, they should observe the Sabbath of their Lord (1 John 2: 3-6).

Yet, like the Pharisees, they have managed to concoct their own version and time of the Sabbath. They teach that Jesus is okay with them having abolished the Sabbath day and replacing it with what they call The Lord’s Day. I’m talking about their attempt to transfer the solemnity of the seventh-day (Saturday) to the first day of the week (Sunday). Of course, it hasn’t been literally transferred – it’s only a mental thing – because man cannot actually reverse what God has ordained and blessed (Genesis 2:3; Numbers 23: 20).

In thinking that they have effectually made the change, they don’t realize that they have mounted an attack on Jesus’ power and right to rule over that which He created. Instead, by their own reasoning, though they don’t look at it in this way, the creature knows better than the Creator.

This amounts to following Anti-Christ thinking, which was foretold in Daniel 7: 25. There, it is said that the “little horn” (Bible scholars agree that “little horn” is synonymous with Anti-Christ) will think/intend to change God’s times and laws.

God, who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, blessed and sanctified the seventh-day as the Sabbath. Nowhere in the Bible is it found that He changed it. He made it for mankind to observe and keep holy (Mark 2: 27; Exodus 20: 8-11). And as Sabbath observance is part of the Ten Commandments, the testimony of God’s character, it, like the other nine commandments, is eternal.

That the seventh-day is the true Lord’s Day is testified as such in Isaiah 58: 13, 14:

“If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot from doing your own pleasure on My holy day, and call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and honor it, desisting from your own ways, from seeking your own pleasure and speaking your own word, Then you will take delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; and I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Did you notice “My holy day” and “The holy day of the Lord?” Forget what man says. God, Himself, says the seventh-day is the Lord’s Day.

We should follow the Lord and worship Him the way He wants to be worshiped.
