Asaph’s Stumbling Block

I overheard someone wonder aloud the question of how come the wicked and those who reject God seem to get away with all manner of wickedness, and at the same time seem to enjoy fulfilled lives? Hearing that reminded me of two things: firstly, King Solomon saying that there isn’t anything new under the sun, and secondly, that God is a just God.

That the question is age-old goes back to perhaps its first written recording found in Psalm 73. In verses 1-24, the writer, Asaph, was troubled by and envious of the ungodly’s prosperity in wealth and health. He couldn’t understand why this would be the case because their actions were opposed to everything God stood for.

He was torn by this; so much so that it got to the point of him wondering if it were all for nothing that he sought to live a godly life. He was close to giving up. That is, until he sought refuge in the house of God, the pillar of truth.

There, Asaph saw that the ungodly would not escape the consequences of their actions. He understood that God is a fair God, and that in the end, He would reward all accordingly. The wicked will get their just desserts.

This relatable story by Asaph is one of my favorites. When you get a chance, do read it for yourself, including the remaining verses, 25-28.
